Professor Song is a developmental and stem cell biologist, who is interested in developing stem cell-based therapeutics for various intractable neurological diseases, including stroke, Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s disease. His group has recently generated 10 most frequent HLA homozygous iPSC lines from Korea, which will cover more than 40% of the Korean population. As a director of GAiT (Global Alliance for iPSC Therapies), he is also interested in establishing international collaboration to collect the global HLA information and its related resources, as well as setting up the guidelines for quality control of clinical-grade iPSC lines. Using these clinical-grade iPSC lines, Prof. Song is planning to perform a clinical trial on Huntington’s disease in the next few years. At the same time, Prof. Song’s group has established more than 40 different iPSC lines form sporadic and familial forms of Alzheimer’s disease patients, which will provide useful tools for disease modeling and drug screening in the future.
